Solifugae (Arachnida): Indigenous Southern African names and their meanings

چکیده

The order Solifugae (Arachnida) often has the word ‘spider’ (e.g. sunspider, camelspider) or ‘scorpion’ windscorpion) as main descriptor in its common names. Being neither a spider nor scorpion, we suggest ‘solifuge’, derived from scientific name of order, most neutral English vernacular for these arachnids. Southern Africa is rich solifuge diversity, which also reflected and imaginative local names this group. These allude to myths associated with solifuges, their characteristic behaviours, unique striking morphology. Here briefly translate discuss 40 terms used solifuges 25 languages dialects southern (Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe), plus seven five East Africa.
